11 Days

Laos, or to give the country its full name “The Lao People’s Democratic Republic”, is the only landlocked country in South East Asia and is the most mountainous. It is the ideal place for motorcycle adventures.

More bombs were dropped on Laos during the Vietnam war than on Germany and Japan combined during World War II. It made Laos, per capita, the most heavily bombed country in history. Today it remains one of the poorest countries in Asia and listed as ‘third world’. Still a one party communist state, the hammer and sickle flag is to be seen throughout the country.
Riding through Laos will be an experience of a lifetime. The people are always smiling and friendly, the children waving as we ride through villages, the adults sometimes shy but always welcoming.

Due to its third world nature, the roads of Laos can be hit and miss. We’ll ride some great tarmac and some not so great, and you’ll also learn to dodge more than a few potholes along the way! One thing is for certain, you’ll be treated to some of the most stunning mountain vistas, beautiful river valleys and sights of anywhere you’ve ever ridden a motorcycle…..

The itinerary runs as follows:

  1. Chiang Mai to Dan Sai. 9:00am sees us on the bikes with engines running and an eagerness to “get out there” and start the experience. We’ll let you get familiar with the controls and handling of the Vstrom 650 by exiting the city on an easy highway before the going gets twisty. Today’s ride is about getting to our overnight hotel set in the beautiful and tranquil mountains of Loei close to the Thai/Laos border. The ride comprises a mix of twisty roads with a few straights to take a breather on! We’ll split the trip with the world-famous Fae’s Elephant Hospital where you have the opportunity to get up close with these magnigicent creatures.
  2. Dan Sai to Vientiane. An eight o’clock start to the day and straight down to the Friendship Bridge for the border crossing into Laos. Our experienced staff will handle all of the difficult paperwork to take a bike into Laos, hopefully the process will be complete within a couple of hours. After crossing the Mekhong river into Laos, twe are presented with some beautiful riding through remote farming villages, the road bordered by rice paddies. On arrival at the capital of Vientiane, we will visit Patuxay monument, the Buddha Park, Tat Luang Pagoda and other points of interest around capital.
  3. Vientiane to Thakhek. Head west out of the city to the upcoming town of Thakhek, home of beautiful French colonial architecture nestled on the banks of the Mekhong. A truly charming town with lots of unrealised tourism potential – visit it now!
  4. Thakhek to Vieng Thong. Part of the world famous Thakhek loop offering breathtaking views of towering karst mouuntains, lush forests and serene rural villages. Along the way there’s waterfalls, caves and potentail swimming spots.
  5. Vieng Thong to Phonsavan. After a quiet night in rustic Vieng Thong, we mount up agan and head for the Plain of Jars. Denoted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mysterious area housing large megalithic era stone vessels who’s original use has baffled explorers throughout the ages. This was also the most heavily bombed area of the country during the Vietname war and there is still strong evidence of this whereby the locals have used large shell cases as stilts to raise their houses above the rice paddy and also craters. Be careful where you step as there is still unexploded ordanance!
  6. Phonsavan to Luang Prabang. A mixed bags of roads running through an ever-changing geological landscape sees us heading west towards the cultural capital of the country. Luang Prabang is the gem of Laos and sometimes referred to “The Rose of South East Asia” with it’s untouched colonial era architecture and quaint little lanes leading down to the river. We’ll lodge in a nice central location close to the river and an easy walk to the nightlife and old city center.
  7. Activity day in Luang Prabang. Activities include:
A visit to the Kuang Si waterfall, boasting pale turquoise blue water that tumbles from the dense jungle above into perfectly sculpted limestone tiered pools below.
    An Asian black bear sanctuary.
Visits to the places of interest in the UNESCO protected city.
    Mekong sunset river cruise.
  8. Luang Prabang to Nam Kat Yorla Pa. After leaving the city we’ll head into the River Ou Valley before ascending into the high mountain passes and passing through the regional capital of Oudom Xai. Our overnight destination of Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort is absolutely unique in the area. The resort and surrounding area offers such activities such as ziplining and trekking to waterfalls but all done in sympathy with the the natural surroundings found in the national park area where its situated. We consider the jewel in the crown of the tour.
  9. Nam Kat Yorla Pa to Boten. A lunchtime start to take advantage of the activities available in the national park and then it’s on the bikes for the short 130km ride to our next overnight of Boten, right on the Chinese border with the predominant language being Mandarin Chinese. After passing through hours of extremely rural scenery, arrival in this modern town will come as quite a shock. Its reputation as a den of iniquity has somewhat diminished over the last few years, with the closure of the casinos and most of the brothels. However, it’s definitely worth a look for the curiosity value and the noodle shops serve up some of the best fayre ever!
  10. Boten to Huay Xai. Heading back away from the Chinese border and towards the international Thai/Laos crossing at Huay Xai. The road descends through gorgeous valleys and high mountain passes with spectacular ridge-line riding and the associated panoramic views. Our last evening in Laos will be spent on the banks of the river Mekhong in the sleepy town of Huay Xai from which we can observe the bright lights of Chiang Khong on the opposite bank.
  11. Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai. The last day and after all we’ve seen and encountered, there’s still a couple more highlights to share with you. Just outside of Chiang Mai is Wat Rong Khun, more commonly known as “The White Temple”. OK, it’s a tourist trap, but is absolutely stunning and a must see. After that and on our way back to Chiang Mai we’ll take a very remote and small road to a village ran by families who grow internationally famous coffee and you’ll have the opportunity to sample and purchase their wares. Arrival time back to Chiang Mai is forseen to be approx 4pm.
