Short for time? Unsure about riding in Laos? Want to see what it’s all about? Perfect – this is the tour for you.

We’ve been traveling to Laos since 2001 as “adventure riders” and commercially we’ve ran tours to the country since 2013 so we consider that we have a decent amount of experience to formulate and plan tours that take you on a condensed route pulling in cultural and historical highlights whilst riding roads that are hand-picked for the experience they deliver.

We appreciate that Laos is probably very much unknown to most of our readers and what knowledge most have can be summed up as “Thailand’s emerging cousin”. True, the infrastructure is somewhat behind it’s neighbours to the east and west (Vietnam & Thailand) but thanks to injections of Chinese cash, it’s rapidly changing it’s face whilst still keeping it’s cultural identity which has slowly evolved over centuries.

A little known fact – more bombs were dropped on Laos during the Vietnam war than on Germany and Japan combined during World War II. It made Laos, per capita, the most heavily bombed country in history. Today it remains one of the poorest countries in Asia and listed as ‘third world’. Still a one party communist state, the hammer and sickle flag is to be seen throughout the country.
Riding through Laos will be an experience of a lifetime. The people are always smiling and friendly, the children waving as we ride through villages, the adults sometimes shy but always welcoming.

Due to its third world nature, the roads of Laos can be hit and miss. However, over the years, we have gained extensive knowledge of the road network and frequent visits to this magnificent country have enabled us to recce previously undiscovered routes unused by other tour companies. Because of this, you’ll be treated to almost deserted roads with pristine tarmac and seductive curves plus some of the most stunning mountain vistas, beautiful river valleys and sights of anywhere you’ve ever ridden a motorcycle…..

road in Laos following the Mekhong river

The itinerary runs as follows:

  1. Chiang Mai to Dan Sai. 9:00am sees us on the bikes with engines running and an eagerness to “get out there” and start the experience. We’ll let you get familiar with the controls and handling of the Vstrom 650 by exiting the city on an easy highway before the going gets twisty. Today’s ride is about getting to our overnight hotel set in the beautiful and tranquil mountains of Loei close to the Thai/Laos border. The ride comprises a mix of twisty roads with a few straights to take a breather on! We’ll split the trip with the world-famous Fae’s Elephant Hospital where you have the opportunity to get up close with these magnigicent creatures.
  2. Dan Sai to Vientiane. An eight o’clock start to the day and straight down to the Friendship Bridge for the border crossing into Laos. Our experienced staff will handle all of the difficult paperwork to take a bike into Laos, hopefully the process will be complete within a couple of hours. After crossing the Mekhong river into Laos, twe are presented with some beautiful riding through remote farming villages, the road bordered by rice paddies. On arrival at the capital of Vientiane, we will visit Patuxay monument, the Buddha Park, Tat Luang Pagoda and other points of interest around capital.
  3. Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Today has us skirting along the banks of the Mekhong for the first 100km – this is a rider’s dream with exceptional road surfaces and spectacular views. Overnight in the lively town of Vang Vieng which is set in a beautiful limestone karst river valley.
  4. Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. Ride through beautiful limestone karst scenery with beautiful rice paddies at ground level. Ascend to the highest point of our trip via the Kasi valley and take a stop to appreciate the spectacular views.
  5. Activity day in Luang Prabang. Activities include:
A visit to the Kuang Si waterfall, boasting pale turquoise blue water that tumbles from the dense jungle above into perfectly sculpted limestone tiered pools below.
    An Asian black bear sanctuary.
Visits to the places of interest in the UNESCO protected city.
    Mekong sunset river cruise.
  6. Luang Prabang to Nan. We use the ferry across the Mekhong first thing in the morning then are met with a day to remember. Awesome roads, stunning scenery, and little or no traffic. “Private racetrack” anybody?  Progress needs to be swift today and the roads help – freshly surfaced and beautifully contoured tarmac awaits us to whisk us back into Thailand and our overnight stop in the provincial capital of Nan.
  7. Nan to Chiang Mai. A 9am start this morning and, once clear of Nan city, a ripper of a ride through the mountains to our final lunch stop of the tour at the picturesque lakeside town of Phayao. After lunch and a stroll to aid digestion, it’s back on the bikes for the final 160km push back into Chiang Mai on a mix of beautiful sweepers and a fast, well-surfaced dual carriageway. Estimated arrival time is approx 4pm.
